ART GALLERY OF ONTARIO | BRUCE MAU DESIGN Architectural Consultant | Nov. 2005 - July 2006 The signage for the Art Gallery of Ontario originated from Gehry’s mission to unite the piecemeal galleries while marking the transition from the busy Chinatown to the quiet Grange park that the occurs at the gallery site. Numerous materials and typography were tested for their ability to be legible in two scales – civic and pedestrian - and various speeds – walking, biking, streetcar and automobile. For instance, materials such as lumisty films, metal meshes, etc. were designed to provide civic signage but ‘dissolve’ as one approaches the building. Similarly typography embedded with smaller text and typography composed of smaller text were designed to mediate the various faces of the gallery expansion. |
