MAN ON THE MOON - A TRANSFORMING MONUMENT FOR MICHAEL JACKSON
Mark Baechler & Neeraj Bhatia
Moon, Space, 2009.

Michael Jackson - a figure larger than life, hovering between the lime-light and shadows, between earth and outer space, and as the media has noted, between black and white - requires a memorial that embraces both the grandeur of such an icon as well as the polarities instilled in his character.  The proposed monument capitalizes on utilizing the surface of the moon and a crater on earth as surfaces to ‘etch’ an image of Michael onto for each lunar cycle.  Two 'Moonwalker' robots simultaneously rake an image of Michael, that transcends national boundaries, languages, and cultural differences, as Michael's music did, allowing the globe to unite and celebrate his life.  ‘Earth Michael’, located in Meteor Crater, Arizona, is wrapped by a circular ramp that carves through the craters walls and leads to an observation platform.  It was the moon that transformed Michael in Thriller, and now once again, it is the moon that will transform to be a dynamic memorial to our beloved pop icon.
